Student Learning Objective:
First Semester Projects
Who are you?Honestly, who are you? Have you thought about the characteristics that make up who you are as an individual, as a member within the world? So...lets translate this into a self-portrait. Just as Frida Kahlo examined her life in the shadow of her husband, our self-portraits communicate things that we just can't say with words.
1. Research: Find a tutorial that displays that end result you seek. Think about colors, textures, words, or even scenes to place yourself. 2. Planning: Use either a full body picture or chest up self portrait to start. 3. Reflect: Think about the art elements. How can you use a combination, a single one, etc to display your message? 4. Do: Finish and display on your website with a link to the website tutorial, 5.Justify in writing: write three sentences describing meaning and what you have learned under the image on your website. Make it interesting...I get bored quickly. |
Theatre Posters:
|
Posters that Convey a MessageStudents will work alone on this project, creating a powerful and thought provoking design that conveys a message dealing with either:
1) Social issue 2) political view The poster has to include words (be careful on quantity...minimum is best) use of color to convey meaning, and can use images taken from the internet. Lastly, you can use Illustrator and Photoshop as part of this creation. Need some ideas: Video for Social here. Final Instructions (major part of your grade): Display on your website upon completion, with a link to any tutorials used for inspiration, links to images used, and one written paragraph describing meaning and what you learned using art elements & principles of design within the description. Without this, 15 pts. will be removed from your total score. |
Surreal Landscapes: Recreate a new land...Time to design your own personal fantasy landscape. Full of drama, intrigue and various elements. Why? This is your final demonstration of skills acquired in this class. However you do need some resources.
1. Research: Fantasy land must be taken from a description found in literature. Think of your favorite book. What about Harry Potter? Do you think those graphic artists had to recreate that scene? YES! So read over your favorite book and recreate that scene. Draw up scenes in your sketchbook first. 2. Planning: Seek out various elements to create the scene and store in your library before beginning. 3. Practice with a good tutorial. Here is one. 4. Do: Create and place on your website. 5. Justify: You know the drill. Write one paragraph about what you learned, including what piece of literature this was inspired from. Link the tutorial. |
Second Semester Projects

Click here for full details. What you will learn?

Black and white only, edited via PS. High contrast preferred, shallow depth of field. Size: 8x10, 300 dpi. Submit 5-7 on website. |
T-shirt DesignUsing Illustrator, create three shirts (long, short, and athletic) for our GWHS store. Link here.

Floating Leviatation Project
Freedom and Structure: the project is completely on your own while meeting the set criteria.
Click here for a detailed lesson plan.
What you will learn:
All students will learn how to master using layers masks in photoshop, by creating powerful compositions that have obvious focal points, and give the illusion of floating.
Why is this important to connecting to life?

All students will learn how to master using layers masks in photoshop, by creating powerful compositions that have obvious focal points, and give the illusion of floating.
Why is this important to connecting to life?
- Do not be fooled by what you initially see.
- First impressions are not always the best impression.
- We hide things as humans because of various feelings: fear, anger, confusion, doubt, distrust. The things we all need is to be loved for who we are, but we cover it up so others do not see what we are really scared about.
CREATIVE RESUMES
We all need a resume at some point in our lives. Why? In order to be considered for a job, you need to send in a resume. For creatives, this is the first impression to be considered for a 'creative' job, therefore the resume needs to be creative.
What are you learning:All students will learn how to create a "creative" resume using InDesign. This will include identifying fonts, color schemes, using InDesign and determining which info to include (writing) in the resume.
Why should you care:A creative resume is the first piece of art that future employers look at to determine if you are a quality candidate to hire. It's the very first impression. Let's build one here together, with the critiquing eyes of our family.
Requirements: Use InDesign. Make sure it includes colors that demonstrate you, combo of two fonts (sans serif and serif) and is creative. Remember to research "high school" resumes on what to include. Post on your website.

The Big CompetitionChoose on Worth1000.com and compete either this project or this one. Follow the requirements, display them on your website, and submit the final design on your website. What will you learn? How to meet a graphic design challenge and creatively meet it. Remember to look at the previous winners on the challenges for ideas.
